New Release: 1/32 Mk. 13 Aerial Torpedoes

A project that started out of spite over a year ago has finally reached its conclusion.

The 1/32 Mark 13 Aerial Torpedo is now available in four delicious flavors:

DS32004 – Mk. 13 (Early) – The unmodified, failure-prone original torpedo fielded by the US Navy from 1941 through the end of 1943. This is the one that was carried by Devastators and Avengers at Coral Sea, Midway, and Guadalcanal.

DS32005 – Mk. 13 (Ring Tail) – Mk. 13 with plywood “pickle barrel” drag ring and circular tail shroud developed by CalTech. Standard late-war torpedo for Avengers*, 1944–45. Post-war, you can also find these and ring tail Mk. 13s being carried by AD-4 Skyraiders in Korea.

DS32006 – Mk. 13 (Box Tail) – Mk. 13 with drag ring and wooden box tail. Late-war torpedo fit for Avengers*, 1944–45. Post-war, you can also find these and ring tail Mk. 13s being carried by AD-4 Skyraiders in Korea.

DS32007 – Mk. 13 (Premium) – All-in-one Mk. 13 with the parts needed to build any wartime configuration.

All four are available now in the shop, along with a growing collection of downloadable, 3D-printable STL files.

*Yes. I know that other aircraft also carried the Mark 13 (or could, but rarely did). Most of those aircraft don’t exist in 1/32 scale:

  • Lockheed PV-1 Ventura
  • Martin AM-1 Mauler
  • Douglas AD-4 Skyraider
  • North American PBJ-1 Mitchell
  • Grumman F7F Tigercat
  • Consolidated PBY Catalina

A few additional pics for reference and possible inspiration:

Note the plywood stabilizers and drag rings fitted to these torpedos’ tails and noses, and the nickname painted on one of the stabilizers. Yes, that’s a Mark 13 being carried by an F7F-3N Tigercat. Looks like a later or modified warhead, but the box fin is still in use.
TBD-1 Devastator carrying a Mk. 13 during the Battle of Midway.
AD-4 Skyraider carrying a Mk. 13. Note the drag ring and box tail.
