As I mentioned recently, there are a lot of changes underway. You’ll see them unfolding over the next several weeks (and months?).
But a pretty big one just happened.
Doogs Models is now Doogs Studios.

I’ll be rolling this change out across other channels over the coming days and weeks, and as I do, I wanted to answer a few questions. So here you go, in FAQ style:
Why the change?
This site – hell my entire online presence – was born out of scale modeling. Aircraft, armor, weathering, opinions, the works. But over the last few years, I’ve found myself struggling with the box that we’ve put ourselves in.
I’m so bored with the near-exclusive focus on military subjects. I’m so bored with the obsession over accuracy. Or, as a friend so eloquently put it the other day:
“I’m tired of , essentially, modelling being about masturbating over the forms of machines, and half assed efforts to “honour history”“
I want to climb out of that box, and really explore modeling as a way an artistic medium that uses three-dimensional miniature things to tell stories, evoke emotions, and offer glimpses into other worlds. That and, my scope has grown. It’s not just ‘scale modeling’, it’s 3D design, STLs…I want to experiment with room boxes, book nooks, and other modeling-adjacent pursuits.
Doogs Studios better reflects where things are now – where I am now – and where I’m headed.
Does this mean I’m done with scale modeling?
Not at all. This rebrand, ultimately, is about making space for a wider creative focus. One that includes 3D design, greater experimentation with approaches, and exploration of other miniature pursuits.
What kind of content can you expect going forward?
To some degree, that’s still very much up in the air, and something we’ll discover together.
One type of content you won’t see as much – rants about IPMS or any stoking of stupid doctrinal divisions in scale modeling. Even more than with military subjects, I’m profoundly bored of these. I’ve tried in my way to change some things. But I’ve also found places that welcome that change. If others don’t want to come along, okay.
What you should expect to see more of:
- More short-form videos
- Tutorials and experiments in 3D design and printing
- More original STL releases and design insights
- More adventures like Tank the Rainbow
- More exploration of storytelling and worldbuilding
- Much more focus on terrain, bases, and creating scenes, not just machines.
Will YouTube / Insta / Facebook / Patreon be changing too?
Yes, they will all be updating to Doogs Studios. Patreon already has.
Other than the name and logo changes, and renewed posting activity, I hope to keep the same tone, the same focus on the why of things, that I’ve always had.
One thing that will be changing pretty significantly is a ramp-up in STL offerings. I’ve already updated my Patreon tiers to reflect this, and I’m planning to expand beyond Cults3D to offer STLs on Etsy, Gumroad, and here, on this very site.
I will also be releasing new STLs on a monthly basis – probably about 5-7 new items per month – ranging from simple props and accessories to track sets, conversion kits, bench organization, and even full-blown kits and bases.
What about old STL files and downloads?
Still there, still available. The rebrand isn’t breaking anything like that. If you’ve purchased or downloaded files in the past, they’re still yours. Going forward, you’ll just see them listed under Doogs Studios.
Is this just a name change?
Not quite. Think of it like a creative reset. My way of acknowledging that where I want to go is bigger than just scale models. And giving myself permission to explore that fully.
But it’s still me doing all the things.
Why is all this happening now?
Because of a midlife crisis!
Earlier this summer, I left my corporate job to venture out on my own. I would say I left my “safe” corporate job, but in 2025 it doesn’t feel like those really exist anymore.
I’ve been doing consulting work, but I also want to diversify away from the same messaging / marketing / branding / copywriting work I’ve been doing for so long.
I’m not planning to make a living off of modeling, but maybe, just maybe, some combination of YouTube, Patreon, and STL proceeds can bring in enough supplemental income to 1) justify the effort I put into them and 2) take some of the burden off the consulting side of things.
If you *do* want to support this crazy hope of mine, the best place to do it right now is probably over at Patreon. The first STL drops will be getting underway in August, and most of the tiers get you access to them.

Excellent! I, for one, am tired of airplanes, and am being bugged by children and nephews to try printing. I plan to construct projects with whimsy (my own) and I look forward to your suggestions, as always. Thanks!
Hey Doogs, I’m with you 100%. Seems we’re both pretty much at the same place, but I can justify my inactivity by blaming my job for being too busy. The fact is, for me, the draw to modelling, the creativity, is spoiled by the frustration of using someone else’s interpretation of a subject that nearly always doesn’t match mine. However, unlike you, I love military subjects, but then I’m somewhat brainwashed coming from a military family and having a 28 year military career myself. But, regardless of that, the subject matters not, it’s the techniques, the materials, the advent of technology that is changing the landscape of the hobby that is what I find interesting and how that is being used. I’m definately on board with this, I loved your previous posts and took away a lot from them. I can see from your words your own excitement at what lies ahead and I applaud you for having the guts to it.
Congratulation. Best wishes
Hello, Doog. I look forward to seeing your new project. Can you tell me what STLs are? Not familiar with the term. Thanks, J. C.
STLs are one of the primary file formats for 3D designs. They’re what you download and print (or, load into the slicer and have it save them as another file format that the printer can read).
Good for you Matt. I’m glad you found your way out of the funk you were going through. It’s a yoyo of freedom and terror taking your own road and I’m sure you’ll do fine.
I’m still fascinated with airplanes (even 40 years in aviation hasn’t managed to kill that) so I’m sticking with the same old same old. Besides that, I’m just not geared mentally for adaptation to the 3D stuff, though it is really breaking some barriers and opened a whole world for creativity.
But I’ll be sticking in the “old world” of scale modeling. Do I assume correctly that your old videos et al will still be around?
Terry
Old videos aren’t going anywhere – and just because I’m bored with military things right now doesn’t necessarily mean I will be forever. Heck – several of the STLs I’m working on *are* military in nature.
Awesome move. Best of luck. Most of all…HAVE FUN!
